SMaCS Calendar of Events

This semester we are working hard to bring you a variety of thought provoking and eye opening events. We will list them here as we finalize plans. Here, we list some general activities you should take advantage of, and we follow that with a list of SMaCS-specific activities, many of which you must attend.

General Division activities

Division Colloquium Series
Every other Tuesday at 3:30pm in Violette Hall (TBA). See this page for the semester's schedule.
Mathematical Biology Seminar
If you are interested in applying your skills to discovering new knowledge in biology, come hang out at this seminar, Thursdays (biweekly) in VH 1200, 3:30-5pm. See this page for more info.
Student organization meetings
The Math & CS division has many excellent student organizations. See this page for a list. (As of 9/8/03, the page was quite out-of-date). Email the officers to learn of organization meeting times and places.

Special SMaCS programming

27 Aug 7-8pm in Violette Hall 1212.
SMaCS Orientation meeting. Attendance mandatory. SMaCS only.
9 Sept 3:30 on in Violette Hall 1000.
Visiting colloquium speaker Dr. Lisa Sattenspiel, Associate Professor of Anthropolgy at the University of Missouri, Columbia. She will talk about her work creating mathematical models that predict the spread of contagioiius disease. See the Math & CS division's colloquium page for more info. All members of the Truman & Kirksville community are welcome.
9 Sept 7:30 in Violette Hall 1228.
A conversation with Dr. Sattenspeil. About modeling and applying mathematics in uncommon settings. All students from all majors welcome.
10 Sept 6-7pm in Violette Hall 1228.
SMaCS mentoring meeting. Attendance mandatory. The SMaCS faculty will discuss this year's mentoring program with SMaCS participants, and participants will have time to meet 1-on-1 with their academic mentor. Everyone will eat pizza. SMaCS only.

Trip to Saint Louis. postponed -- new date 16-17 Nov
3 Oct 4pm in Violette Hall 1000
Richard Stallman, the founder of the free software movement, will visit campus and give a public address. More information will be posted as it is available. Seeing this guy speak will be a once in a lifetime experience for many of you, so don't miss it!
(before midterm) make an appointment with your mentor
Get together with your academic mentor to chat about classes and how they are going. Also talk about what courses you might take next semester. Registration will come around sooner than you think.
8 Oct 7-8pm in Violette Hall 1228
Internships: What they are, why you want one, and what you gotta do to land one. Math and CS majors can do anything! Come learn about the different internship opportunities available to y'all and how you can find more. A representative from the Career Center will tell us about their resources and how they will help you, and other SMaCS students will tell you about their internship experiences last summer. Attendance mandatory. All students welcome.
12 Nov 7-8pm in Violette Hall 1228
Graduate School: to go or not to go. Come hear about what graduate school is all about and how you can get grad school to pay you to be a student. Sound like a scam? It ain't. Attendance mandatory. All students welcome.
16-17 November: Trip To St. Louis
We are visiting Towers-Perrin and the Boeing Company.
21 January: Meeting, 7-8pm in Violette Hall 1228
